Indeed, the number of wild chimpanzees is constantly decreasing throughout their range due to habitat destruction, but also and most importantly, due to poaching for bushmeat and the traffic of living animals.
When chimpanzees illegally kept by people are reported, the Congolese Ministry of the Environment, Conservation, Nature and Tourism (MECNT) seizes and entrusts them to J.A.C.K. The sanctuary provides care to the orphans in a safe and healthy environment. Then, it rehabilitates them to facilitate future integration into social groups where they will be able to re-learn the behavioral codes of their species, with the long-term objective to release the groups in a protected area, following protocols already successfully implemented by other African sanctuaries.

J.A.C.K. has built an education center where schoolchildren and visitors can learn about chimpanzees, the threats they face and how they can be protected. It also raises awareness about the importance of protecting the wildlife and the biodiversity of DRC.

Palmyre Conservation has funded J.A.C.K. since 2009 and also supports the sanctuary when it needs to perform emergency primate rescues.
